What is ndt?

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) can be described as an array of non-invasive inspection techniques which are used to evaluate the characteristics of a material, component or system without permanently altering its condition. Since the late 1800s, it has grown from a laboratory curiosity to an indispensable tool of production.

 

Typically, NDT is associated with industrial applications but surprisingly, medical uses are more common. For example, an ultrasound used to monitor the health of an unborn baby or an X-ray used to assess the extent of an injury. When it comes to ensuring quality and more importantly, public safety, the  importance of NDT cannot be over emphasized. Modern NDT has many advantages which can be exploited to:

 

• Ensure product integrity, reliability and quality levels

• Avoid failures, accidents and protect human lives

• Aid in product design, lower costs and increase profits

• Ensure customer satisfaction and maintain manufacturer reputation

 

Aircraft, spacecraft, power plants, refineries, offshore platforms, locomotives and bridges are inspected using some form of NDT during construction and, many societies have codified periodic inspections throughout their service lives.
